Singapore Night Safari - All You Need to Know

Singapore has many unique offerings that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. One such offering is the Singapore Night Safari. Though many zoos around the world have started offering night safaris, Singapore was the first to come up with this concept. Zoos around the world change the sleep cycle of their animal population, so visitors can see them during the daytime, but that is unnatural. Singapore Night Safari paved another way. Today, Singapore Night Safari is one of the major tourist attractions in the country that draws millions from all around the world.

History

Dr. Ong Swee Law, the then director of Singapore Zoo, had long suggested a nocturnal zoo that took advantage of the fact that most animals are nocturnal. Though he had made plans in the 1980s, the Singapore Night Safari only came into being in 1994. It was built adjacent to the Upper Seletar Reservoir and Singapore Zoo. Singapore Night Safari occupies 86 acres of rainforest land and is home to some rare and endangered animals housed in spaces that replicate their natural habitat.

Animals

Today, the Singapore Night Safari is home to more than 900 animals belonging to 100 different species and subspecies. The zoo is home to rare animals like Aardvark, Asiatic lion, Asian elephant, Malayan Tapir, Malayan Tiger, Malayan flying fox, Nile hippo, pangolin, clouded leopard, leopard, fishing cat, serval, common palm civet, red & white giant flying squirrel, spotted hyena, three-banded armadillo, white African lion, Indian rhinoceros sloth bear, and slow loris. These are nocturnal creatures and the zoo starts at night only, so there are no places where you can visit in the day. The visibility of these creatures is created by light that resembles moonlight.

Trails

The zoo is divided into 4 major trails - East Lodge Trail, Leopard Trail, Fishing Cat Trail, and Wallaby Trail. In the East Lodge Trail, you will encounter animals from Africa and Asia. The Leopard Trail is all about seeing the nightly rituals of the big cats and animals like porcupine and civet. The trail also includes furry creatures like the flying squirrel and flying fox. The Fishing Cat Trail is self-explanatory. This is a trial where you can watch the fishing cat live in action. The trail includes other animals like pangolin, armadillo, and giant anteater. Finally, the Wallaby Trail is home to animals from the Australian continent and features cute little marsupials like wallabies, brush-tail possum, and sugar gliders. The animals in the trails are worth getting a Singapore visa

Shows

The Singapore Night Safari has a few shows that are entertaining and enlightening. In the Creatures of the Night show, various animals are displayed and some of them perform a few tricks for the public. Throughout the show, you’ll be enlightened with important facts about all the animals. The African serval shows how quick and long it can leap to catch its prey, and the hyena displays its jaw strength by not letting go of the food being fed to it. This is quite an interactive show and it is a must for tourists with children.

There’s also a Thumbuakar Performance. Members of an African tribe perform traditional dances, and fire-breathing acts to entertain you. There’s music, dance, and lots of fire to keep you on the edge of your seat. To be a part of the shows, you will need to make your bookings in advance online as the shows are always packed. On the spot, tickets are not available.
